The View from Port Huron

The View from Port Huron

On This Date: Photo taken 11/12/2016

The saltie–an ocean-going ship–Federal Maas heads downstream on the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario, one year ago today.

And it would seem that the gent by the railing has caught himself a fish.

Call me a boatnerd; I don’t mind. If I lived in Port Huron (or Duluth, or Marquette, or the Soo) I’d be down by the river (lake, locks) nearly every day to watch the ships pass. Instead I get to Port Huron and Sault Ste Marie once or twice a year apiece, and make do.

“Boatnerd” is a relatively new word that means a person who watches ships on the Great Lakes. The term was coined by Neil Schultheiss, who began building his www.boatnerd.com website when the World Wide Web was young. His was one of the first sites I discovered when I first got online in 1995.
