Big Marsh

Big Marsh

On This Date: Photo taken 10/22/2005

Yep. Another photo taken at one of the CraneFest events.

Surely you’ve noticed by now that there are lots of birds in this photograph. Have you noticed that there are many more already landed in that pond than there are still floating in the sky? Many more are on their way, too; they’ll be arriving until the sun sets.

Yeah, it’s like that at CraneFest, and the subsequent weekends at the Kiwanis Youth Area near Bellevue. I’ve taken thousands of photographs at the Big Marsh. This may be the best.

I love this image. It shows why people go to the festival.

I mentioned a couple days back that shooting pix at Big Marsh can be frustrating, particularly for those of us who own conventional long lenses. This photo was shot from a tripod using my Nikon D70 and my 300 mm lens. It illustrates the problem–the birds are just too far from the viewing area for my setup. I’m losing detail to the distance.

I expect to get a somewhat sharper photograph with my D500–it’s a far better camera, and I’m a better photographer these days–but with the same (excellent) lens the distance issue remains.

Some photographers solve this by bringing really long lenses. Were I serious about birding, I might do the same….

Number of pix taken on various October 22nds: 493
Year of oldest photo: 2005
