We ended the Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin venture I mentioned a few days back by riding the ferry across Lake Michigan. While I took the usual photographs of the Manitowoc and Ludington waterfronts from the boat, for most of the trip I photographed our fellow travelers.
SS Badger has been carrying automobiles and passengers across Lake Michigan since the early fifties. She was primarily a railroad ferry until 1990, when an entrepreneur bought her and converted her to her current configuration. Nowadays she carries mostly tourists, with some business patrons, between Michigan and Wisconsin.
There’s a second, much faster, ferry, called Lake Express, that runs between Muskegon and Milwaukee. We’ve not yet tried her.
