Diamond Dollars by Vince Gennaro: a review

Worth reading. The book has considerable value, but it’s less than I hoped it would be. Gennaro’s a good analyst, and he’s found some interesting numbers to work with, but the analysis is often hidden from sight. I, personally, would have liked more explicit calculations, more discussion of the analysis, and less explication of his conclusions. YMMV.

Change of Command by Elizabeth Moon: a review

This was the first book I read in this series, and it caused me to hunt down the rest of them. The characters are convincing enough to get your attention, and you’ll quickly decide whether the intricate story interests or frustrates you.

The Thirteen-Gun Salute by Patrick O’Brian: a short review

There’s some wonderful writing in this book–the first chapter, in particular, is a tour-de-force of historical reconstruction–but I find the book less than satisfying.

Cochrane by David Cordingly: a short review

A good portrait of Lord Cochrane as a naval hero and as a man. This book is certainly worth reading if you’re interested in Cochrane (or in Patrick O’Brian’s Jack Aubrey). It covers the events of his career adequately, and does an excellent job with his character and the politics which damaged his life.
