Joe Kernan, who became Governor of Indiana when Frank O’Bannon passed away a few weeks ago, is exploring purchasing the South Bend Silver Hawks. This exploration began before Kernan became governor, and is still continuing.
The Hawks ownership group, Palisades Baseball, has consistently responded to press inquiries with comments to the effect that they’re not actively seeking a buyer, but will consider offers. The team had serious cash-flow problems in 2002, but has paid off its debts, renegotiated its lease, and appears to be on a sound footing.
Richard Nussbaum, a long-time Kernan associate who’s quoted in the linked articles, is the Midwest League’s counsel and secretary. That probably can’t hurt the effort.
