I really didn’t want do this page, as it was quite a bit of work that I knew would immediately became obsolete. Fortunately it soon became unnecessary, as I was able to replace the page with a link to the USA Today website.
As the 1996 season began there was an infrastructure in place for current, daily results, but it seemed to be only available to baseball’s professionals. Before the season ended USA Today and nando.net were posting up-to-date statistics, and by 1999 stats would become easy to find. But early in 1996 there was no ready statistics source, and my audience was pretty vocal about wanting more. So I put together this page. Fortunately for my sanity, it soon became irrelevant.
Prior to the world wide web, getting current minor league baseball statistics was difficult. The single best source, where available, was the scoresheet inserts available at the ballyard. The Sporting News (published weekly) and later Baseball America (more or less biweekly) and USA Today Baseball Weekly (weekly, of course) were reliable sources, but subject to publication delays. Some newspapers published this information, but usually only on Sundays; it wasn’t yet clear how the State Journal was planning to handle the issue.
Differently, there were some informal internet-based resources: Internet pioneer Chuq Von Rospach ran a couple minor league mailing lists on his Plaidworks.com servers; one of those was devoted to publishing game results. And there were usenet newsgroups which sometimes posted useful information.
