Lugnuts Notes: Series at Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
These four-game sets are pretty much the league norm. Each league team plays eight games against each of the teams in the “other” divisions, which essentially dictates that games be scheduled in parcels of four (four home, four away; one series in each half-season). For consistency’s sake, the “local” teams are usually also parceled in fours, though it’s fairly common for the series to move between parks in mid-set. (We’ve already seen this.) Nonetheless the Lugnuts begin their existence with an odd single-month schedule.

Lugnuts Notes: Home and Away Series Against the Michigan Battle Cats
Tuesday’s game was interesting. Both teams played well until late in the game, then both relief staffs failed. Debbie was counting pitches on her scorecard and says there were about 75 pitches thrown in the tenth inning; essentially, neither staff was throwing strikes. Neat crowd that night, loud and involved in the game, even though it was really cold.

Lugnuts Notes: Road Series at Cedar Rapids
My roster preview said we needed [Pat] Hallmark on the team. That was based on his stats last season, not any inside information. Pat’s mostly been playing outfield, due partly to injuries (Schafer, Quinn, and Beltran) and partly just to keep his bat in the lineup. He’s near the top of the league’s leader list in nearly every hitting category including .323 BA, 13 Runs, 11 RBIs, and 8 Steals. A really nice start for the season.

Lugnuts Notes: Home and Away Series Against the West Michigan Whitecaps
Mark Quinn and Carlos Beltran collided on the first play of the game last night, and the Journal believes they will be out for a few days. A strange series; the first game was well-played, the second was silly, the third was awful (9 errors), and the last started with an injury. Welcome to the low minors, Lansing.

Lugnuts Notes: Road Series Against Burlington Bees
Two extra-inning losses made for a bad road trip. Circumstances at work made it difficult for me to track the series closely.

Lugnuts Notes: 1996 Opening Day Roster
Are any of them “prospects”? I dunno. All of them are physically capable of astonishing things. By that definition, all are prospects. Probably the best of them is at least three years from the majors, and three years is a long time when you’re twenty. Watch them play, and judge for yourself. I’ll have opinions by June, and I’m likely to tell them, but you’re not required to agree.
