Autumn’s arrived. Probably on this day I’d stopped at the credit union, but for 33 years this pond was an everyday presence in my life.

Do notice the swan.

My September 28 pix were mostly taken for my 2012 and 2014 photo-a-day projects. A surprising number of them are of a kitten climbing our trellis.

Also on this date–in 2008–I took my last photograph with the kit 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 lens that came with my Nikon D70; it was of a book for an eBay sale. A few days later I’d break the lens by dropping the camera at CraneFest…..

Manistee’s Catwalk

There’s more than one route home….

Most years we head pretty much directly home from Traverse City. But sometimes we like variety. 2011 was one of those; we headed down the coast and looked at lighthouses and beaches. And the high view at Arcadia.

Not all late-September photographs are from vacations.

On 9/27/2006 I was functioning as our building’s staff photographer, and took 260 photographs of an award ceremony. Those pix, I’m quite certain, are only interesting to the folks involved.

Similarly, on 9/27/2014 I photographed a retirement party. My sister-in-law cares….

Empire Bluff

Empire Bluff

On This Date: Photo taken 9/26/2009

Photo taken from south of the dune, at Esch Beach. I usually photograph this hill from the beach at Empire Village, on the north side.

I posted a similar photograph in 2009, shortly after I took these.

There’s a fairly short trail on the top of the bluff, running from a parking lot atop the hill to a boardwalk along the dune’s face. It’s an excellent, though somewhat hilly, walk through old orchards, leading to a fine view of Lake Michigan and the neighboring dunes and beaches.

The Air Force used to operate a radar station atop Empire’s dune. In 1970 the Army posted me to a similar facility in northern California. This gives me a completely imaginary tie to Empire, and warms my heart. The view from Mt. Tam may–or may not–have been better.

Ducks in the water at Pointes North Resort Hotel, Traverse City.

I often photograph Joan on her birthday. This isn’t one of those photographs.

Bet you could figure that out for yourself….

While there’ve been quite a few exceptions, we generally head for Traverse City for our birthdays, and usually we stay at Pointes North.

Richard’s 2008 Minnesota vacation had ended. He took 70 photographs, mostly through the window of his train. A handful were taken at places I can identify.

Continuing yesterday’s Ludington story….

The next morning we found breakfast across the street from our hotel, then headed north along the lakeshore. The day was blustery, and Lake Michigan was magnificent.

I took this photo at Point Betsie, where we wandered the beach for a while and snapped merrily away.

Well, yeah. Here it is.

All 315 pix I took had that bee, too.

Five years ago we headed north for our usual Traverse City vacation to celebrate Joan’s birthday. It occurred to me that I didn’t remember making a reservation, so I got on the horn with Pointes North. Found I was right; hadn’t reserved a room. They could accommodate us starting tomorrow….

Made that reservation, then after a bit of discussion found us a Ludington hotel for the night. We told TomTom about our changed destination (discovering thereby that it calls the town “LOOdington”), followed its directions to the hotel, and found this view at the beach.

Pretty much justified the confusion. We had a good evening, and a good weekend.

I’ve told this story before.

Not doing TC this year. We’ll tell you about our plans presently, I’m sure.

Piecework

Hammer, chisel, a concrete block to use as an anvil, some broken pavers.

At one end of the walk there was a wedge that needed filled; at the other end a row needed trimmed to fit the available space as the walk met the porch. As we completed the sidewalk project we were cutting bricks.

Worth a mention: A few years later the folks who built our new porch made an effort to fit the steps to our sidewalk. Although the fit’s imperfect we’ve always appreciated that.

Richard’s 2008 vacation to Minnesota continued; he took 14 photographs on the 21st, mostly of the festival he’d watched them prepare for the day before. There’s also a 2005 photo; Dick photographed the lighthouse from South Haven’s beach.

Bernard W. Baker Sanctuary

Bernard W. Baker Sanctuary

Another place we often wander is Michigan Audubon’s Baker Sanctuary, usually on their Meadow and Marshland Trail. You eventually come to a pretty little pond, which has a neighboring picnic area. This photo was taken there.

Baker Sanctuary’s most famous for its Sandhill Cranes, and for the Crane Festival (called CraneFest) it hosts with Battle Creek Kiwanis every October. We attend the festival most years and highly recommend it.

The sanctuary is near Bellevue, but is often said to be near Marshall. Neither town’s a helpful landmark, so here’s a Google map to the trail. And here’s an excellent trail map that Google found on Audubon’s website. There’s a second trail, called the Doty Wildflower Trail, at the park’s headquarters; it’s also worth a visit.

The sanctuary used to have an excellent website, but that’s gone. Michigan Audubon has a bit of information about the sanctuary scattered here and there on their website.

My brother Richard was still visiting our sister in Minnesota during 2008. Dick got some photographs of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Fernando, where Debbie was pastor; the church was preparing for a festival. He also took some pix of horses at a local farm. In all I’ve 44 photos he took on 9/20/2008.
