Barn

Barn

Near Pleasantview Church on Lacey Road in Barry County; apparently this is a Dowling address.

I’ve posted this photo before, in monochrome as part of my 2012 Outtakes set. The photo invites creative processing, because you’ve got to do something about the pic’s general busy-ness. Last time I just washed everything out; this time I tried to emphasize the colors. I like both versions.

My notes had the location wrong on this photo, something I recognized immediately last night when I was sorting through my 11/27 pix. So this morning’s first task was finding this farmyard.

Five years ago today I took photographs in or near all of these Barry County towns: Prairieville, Delton, Hickory Corners, Pine Lake (not a town), Dowling, and Nashville. (Also the Eaton County towns Vermontville, Mulliken, and Grand Ledge.) I was a busy guy that day. (And that accounting leaves out whatever I did in Kalamazoo that morning.) Anyway, finding this barn’s site required reconstructing the trip, then making an educated guess about the location. I was helped by the fact I took another photo of the farmyard, with more details. I found the farm by comparing overhead photos with the layout features I could see in the other photograph, then verified it with a not-very-helpful Streetview image.

Many of the 83 two-star photographs were of an uncooperative subject at the 2014 Thanksgiving party in Schoolcraft. Gage started spinnin’ every time I pointed my camera his direction….

Eventually we got smart and installed an eavestrough on the front of the garage, so this doesn’t happen any more.

And yeah, I got carried away with the processing on this one….

Another Thanksgiving photo. Here’s Joan’s niece at last year’s party. Joan grew up in this house.

This photo, too, has focus issues. Much of the set does; I often get impatient when I shoot close-up pix of people.

My November 24 photographs mostly document Thanksgiving parties or rainy days–two of each. Predominantly, though, the pix are of the parties.

Yeah, the focus is wrong. Let’s go with this one anywho….

My aunt Jackie, her daughter Kristin, and the back of Pat’s head (Pat’s my cousin Paul’s wife) at the Dinda family’s Thanksgiving gathering, which was hosted by Jackie and my uncle Keith for many years.

Those outings featured a twisted Hearts game (Keith called it “Crazy Hearts”) with the deck doubled (or tripled), which made hands unpredictable because the high cards might tie, canceling each other. The 2006 game’s pictured here.

Joan and I would alternate, more or less, between the Dinda Thanksgiving and her family’s.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Grace Highway, near Mulliken, Michigan.

Joel was out early, roaming the local backroads, listening to Kyle Cantrell interview IIIrd Tyme Out on SiriusXM’s Bluegrass Junction, and having a grand old time.

Truth.

I sometimes repeat myself. I considered posting a photograph that is very similar to yesterday afternoon’s photo-a-day photo, also taken on Grace Highway.

I may yet post that photo….

Morning Fog, with Sun

Morning Fog, with Sun

On This Date: Photo taken 11/21/2012

I saw Joan off to work, then grabbed my camera and walked to the end of Potter Street, where I shot a dozen or so images of the fog. Then I drove into Grand Ledge, presumably to get breakfast, stopping a couple times for photographs.

The house in the photo belonged to George Potter in 1895, but was likely built by his father. Ed Potter had platted the village of Mulliken a few years earlier on land he’d recently purchased.

Barry County Court House

Five years ago today I stopped in Hastings on my way to Kalamazoo. Took photographs of the courthouse.

Somehow I’d not done that before.

I considered writing a little treatise here about not-seeing things you pass by regularly. Or perhaps an essay about how State Street in Hastings has changed over the years.

Couldn’t make either work. We’ll stick with just the photograph.
