Fog, and sunshine, and a distant barn on the Cook family’s Flowerdale Farm–but mostly the Peters’ trees, and lawn, and house, and outbuildings. Down the way a couple lots and across the street from our place.

A similarly-framed photo today would mostly show corn. And rain, this morning, rather than fog.

I posted a color version of this photo three years back, though the image was originally conceived as monochrome. It’s intriguing how the changed processing impacts perception.

No flower in our yard today looks nearly this good….

New “Camera” note: Five years ago I got a new phone–a Motorola Droid Bionic. (I thought it was “Huge,” and commented on Facebook–little did I know.) My first photograph with the phone was, predictably, of our cat Taffy. The second was a selfie.

Generally I’m sitting in my seat in the living room when I unbox a new device and read the manual. Taffy’s often in my line of sight…..

CraneFest

CraneFest

On This Date: Photo taken 10/9/2010

Big Marsh Lake is more marsh than lake. Sandhill Cranes live there.

Michigan Audubon and the Battle Creek Kiwanis host CraneFest every October at the Kiwanis Youth Area by Big Marsh Lake, near Bellevue, Michigan. Joan and I attend most years. The hosts also make the crane viewing area available on subsequent weekends in October and November; we sometimes instead/also make it for one of those weekends.

Imagine hundreds of raucous, tall birds in a single location–overhead, or at “rest” in the swamp.

Workshops. An art fair. A book sale. Food. Birds, of course. And probably things I’ve forgotten.

It’s this weekend. You should go.

Yup, really. The same Saginaw Highway that runs past Lansing Mall. But at the far end of Eaton County, north of Saubee (or should that be Sobby?) Lake.

Joan at Work

Joan at Work

On This Date: Photo taken 10/7/2003

A melancholy day. The “For Sale” sign was already out front, and we were preparing to repaint the deck on the house my family had moved into late in 1972.

‘Twas an afternoon spent doing assorted chores to make the house fully presentable. My brother would join us late in the afternoon and contribute some yard work.

It’s likely we ate supper at Gallagher’s, but I didn’t document that.

Evidently I grab a camera and snap off a few pix nearly every October 7. This project sometimes unearths inexplicable patterns.

Orange Cat, a handsome dude, lived with the neighbors in the house behind our house.

Joan called him Orange Cat because it was descriptive. It turned out that was actually his name….

Stopped for gas in Woodland on my way to Kalamazoo. Looked up, and walked around the pumps to snap this photo of the sky.

There’s a color version of this photo that I posted to Flickr on the day I took it. That rendering is certainly fine.

But I shot the photo in black and white, and prefer this more dramatic version.

Grand River Color

Grand River Color

On This Date: Photo taken 10/4/2012

Danby, Michigan. Charlotte Highway used to cross the Grand River on a skinny little truss bridge, but these days there’s a much more substantial bridge that permits two-way traffic. I miss the old bridge, but the new one’s probably better.

This photo was taken from the boat launch beside the new bridge.

The old bridge lives on, by the way; it’s now in Historic Bridge Park near Battle Creek.

Generally speaking I’m a poor portrait photographer, and I’m even worse at photographing people during events. I don’t do either regularly, and haven’t practiced the skills those types of photography require. But from time to time I get lucky.
