The Upjohn Farm

The Upjohn Farm

On This Date: Photo taken 12/9/2014

Think I’ll just repeat a commentary I wrote in July of 2013:

The Upjohn Farm–now labelled Zoetis–is between Kalamazoo and Richland on Gull Road. Upjohn–a Kalamazoo based pharmaceutical company–used this farm as a research facility. When Asgrow was an Upjohn product line, that division was headquartered here. (My father worked for Upjohn, but not at the farm. I did know a family that lived on the farm, from church.)

Despite several changes of hands in the past two decades, we older Kalamazoo natives seem to still think of this place by the Upjohn name.

For many years this field had cattle, who “crossed” Gull Road through a tunnel. We always thought that was neat.

Don’t Fall!

Don't Fall!

On This Date: Photo taken 12/8/2014

For much of the year you’d see rock climbers….

Oak Park in Grand Ledge, Michigan. The photo doesn’t really show the scale well, but you’re looking down a cliff at the Grand River. Signs in the park warn about 50 foot falls.

Grand Ledge is convenient for me–just a few miles down the road from my house. It’s also photogenic.

GL is mostly a Lansing suburb, these days, but its self-image is former resort town. The city hasn’t forgotten its manufacturing heritage–there’s a park on the grounds of a former brick factory–but the town’s historical imagination features the river and the ledges, Mudge’s Folly and the roller coaster, the Seven Islands Resort, and the Spirtualist and Adventist encampments.

The river and the ledges remain, and are the reason the others found Grand Ledge.

Fare Well

Fare Well

On This Date: Photo taken 12/7/2016

One year ago today Joan’s co-workers threw her a retirement party.

I showed up, of course, and took photographs. I also chatted with friends. Many of those folk had been my colleagues, too.

‘Twas a good afternoon.

Without that party, the seventh of December’s another photo-a-day date. The 2012 pix document a day spent with my brother in Kalamazoo. In 2014 I was still bored (see yesterday’s commentary); half the pix were of the when all else fails trellis.

Tufted Titmouse

Still another date with only photos from daily-photo projects.

On 12/6/2012 I got out early to take (lousy) pix of a glorious sunrise, and some black-and-whites of outdoor lamps. Then I dug out the good camera and a long lens to photograph birds at the feeders.

On 12/6/2014 I was so bored I was reduced to taking novelty shots. Photo-a-day projects do that to people.

Trees and Roots

Another date with only daily-photo pics. I’ll add some more to that pile later today.

I wandered into Fitzgerald Park five years ago and took a bunch of arty, high-contrast monochrome photos that stretched my battered FujiFilm F10. Not everything worked, of course, but on the whole I’m rather pleased with the set.

The 2014 pix were all taken in our yard, with my Nikon 1, and less ambitious. The best were of a cat named Grey.

Grand Ledge Craft Lane

Grand Ledge Craft Lane

On This Date: Photo taken 12/3/2005

Twelve years back I spent my lunch hour wandering around downtown Grand Ledge.

A tree, bricks, repaired brickwork, a door, several air conditioners, windows, a flower box, and those preposterous wires. And a trash can. Enough said.

Oh, yes: The sidewalk’s slant is real.

Towards Michigan’s Capitol

Towards Michigan's Capitol

On This Date: Photo taken 12/2/2014

This walkway honors Michigan’s long-time Attorney General Frank Kelley.

All of my December 2 photographs were taken for photo-a-day projects. 12/2/2012 was a wet day, and the pics were mostly of puddles. On 12/2/2014 I drove into Lansing on a whim and mostly photographed the Vietnam Memorial and the Hall of Justice.

It’s likely that December will have more days with only daily-photo efforts, as I’m less likely to take photographs in winter than the other seasons. At least the daily photo projects help to get me outside when the weather’s uncomfortable.

High Sky

High Sky

On This Date: Photo taken 12/1/2003

Looking south on Mulliken Road on a glorious day in 2003. I’d run home on my lunch hour–quite likely ’twas a post office stop–and was heading back to work.

I pulled off the road near Bev and Chris Walker’s place, grabbed my Olympus C50, and snapped a couple pics of the sky and the country road. This one’s by far the better photo.

I used this image as my desktop pic at work, off and on, for many years. And it’s just now become one of four desktop views on my MacBook Pro.

The rest of my photographic take for 12/1/2003: A couple pix of the cat, four of my Minolta Zoom 110 SLR (an odd beasty; in some ways my favorite camera ever), and two more sky shots–one good, one fuzzy–taken at sunset. An odd haul, all told, but I was probably satisfied.
