Horseshoe Bay

Not sure how we discovered this beach north of Saint Ignace, but it’s one of the places we go during our mid-June weekends on the Mackinac Straits.

Here’s Joan, and Foley Creek, and Lake Huron.

Used to be we’d hike the one-mile trail from the US Forest Service campground at Foley Creek to get to the beach. These days we park near the casino and just walk along the beach. Since USFS has apparently closed the campground, the trail’s probably no longer an option.

In recent years Kurt and his band Harbourtown have been fixtures at the Charlotte (MI) Bluegrass Festival. They’ll be appearing on Thursday, this year (this week). I’m looking forward to hearing them again.

I’ve been attending the Charlotte festival for nearly 40 years. It’s part of my routine; it’s one of the highlights of my summer.

Somewhat to my surprise my camera’s recently given me an identity at both festivals I attend. I’m no longer just one of the fans; folks call me by name, ask where they can find my photographs, and talk with me about past festivals. It’s an interesting change, and I’m not sure why it happened. I’ve been taking pix for years; this part-of-the-show thing’s only happened in the past two or three summers. All in all it just seems, well, odd.

Puzzled. That’s the word.

One of the annual events in Saint Ignace is a car show called Antiques on the Bay. Our Saint Ignace weekends often overlap the event. Sometimes we wander among the cars.

I have trouble thinking of any T-Bird as an antique, though.

A car show, a baseball game, ships at the Soo, ships at Marquette, a bluegrass music festival. Some country road pix, too, and some taken at work meetings. Breakfast. A thorough examination of the Chief Wawatam dock before they prettified it, and lots–lots–of photographs of terns. There’s even a Daily Flower Census in the mix. Of course.

June 17th’s the day I’m most likely to take photographs.

On Mackinac Island you travel by foot, bicycle, or horse.

We’ve never taken one of the carriage tours. Maybe this year….

Holland, Michigan. Properly it’s the Holland Harbor Light, but everyone calls it Big Red.

There will be more lighthouses before we finish this walk through my photo files. I promise.

Besides my own pix, I’ve 25 photographs my brother took at a Habitat for Humanities project on 6/12/2010. Frankly they’re pretty boring; Richard was just documenting the project.

US Mail

US Mail

On This Date: Photo taken 6/11/2012

Fawn–who used to deliver the local rural route–would park her Jeep behind the Mulliken post office while she helped Maureen and Jan sort the day’s mail. Except by 2012 Mo had retired and Jan was only working part-time, so probably someone else was running the office when I took this shot.

Before the year ended they’d moved the mail sort to Grand Ledge, and shortened the hours of my town’s PO.

This is one of my rare SOOC (Straight Out Of the Camera) images….

Four years ago I posted a monochrome version of this photo to my 366 Snaps Outtakes “project,” which attempted to explain the previous year’s 366 Snaps. I see that my commentary on the photo was about the same.

What those comments didn’t mention is that the photo’s overexposed. That’s partly the high contrast of my composition–white buildings on both edges, with bright sun most everywhere, but Fawn’s car’s in the shade. Which was sort of deliberate. I was bored, and trying to push my camera’s limits that day. This specific photo came out well.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park. You park the car, follow the walk past the concession buildings, and this is the view. I love it.

I’ve always loved it.

I’ve been vacationing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula since the early ’60s. This is the place I’m most likely to visit.

Paradise.
