On this date in 2000 Joan and I met up with my family at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, where we checked out the butterflies and orchids in the conservatory and viewed Nina Akam’s recently-completed interpretation of da Vinci’s Horse.

‘Twas a fine Mother’s Day outing.

This may be my best photo of my mother, and I’ve posted it to Flickr before. This treatment’s a bit, though not a lot, different. I like this color palette better.

Shot with my Nikon N90s, and scanned from a negative. One of my first photographic scans, as it happens….

The Vine on the Granary

The Vine on the Granary

We spent Mother’s Day, 2012, at the farm with Joan’s family. This was also the weekend David moved back to Michigan–and the farm–from Louisiana, so ’twas also a bit of a homecoming.

We’d go to the farm and I’d take pix of the granary. It was pretty much an irresistible photo subject. I miss it.

Dave reused most of the lumber when he built the chicken coop, which I now routinely photograph because it, too, is a fine subject. But it’s a different subject, and I photograph it differently.

Notice the pliers, still hanging there, though their orientation’s changed since 2005….

Grosbeaks also come in this less colorful, but still attractive, variety….

Yesterday, a wealth of photographs to choose from. Today, from twice as many originals, mostly I’ve got baseball and lilacs and apple blossoms. And few pix I’d call special.

So it goes….

Actually they’re always attractive, but they’re so obnoxious I tend to forget. The noon-time light on this bird was excellent and showed off his colorful coat.

A wealth of choices today….

I sort through each day’s photos the evening before, and typically pull out two or three; I choose between those just before I do my morning writeup. Today I found eight:

  • A selection of four birds.
  • The inevitable baseball pic.
  • A tulip.
  • Some delightful greenery.
  • A tree in bloom at the Bennett farm.

Two years ago we dropped in at the farm to help celebrate David’s birthday, a couple days late. Dave had gotten his father’s old tractor to run a few days before, so that was the main topic of discussion.

That and Dave’s garden, chickens, ducks, and turkeys. And the old plows. And restoring the barn. Lots of things to check out, and talk about. A fun day.

On May 9 I often go to the ballpark. The 2005 game deserves a bit of attention, because it was the first game I photographed in what I’d call my usual style.

While I’d been experimenting with game photography for about a month, this is the outing where I put the pieces together. Not all the pictures worked, of course, but enough did that I’ve stayed with that general approach ever since.

I’d refine things a bit over the next few games. But this game has the basics down.

I also took my FujiFilm along, and shot my first, and probably best, baseball video: Reid Brignac’s 9th inning home run swing.

She’s a member of the Lansing Lugnuts gameday staff, helping put on between-inning events–dizzy bat races, sing-a-longs, mascot races, balloon tosses, whatever. They keep busy.

Somewhere along the line the Lugnuts began putting nicknames on the backs of the gameday folks. Most are descriptive….

I went to two baseball games on 5/8/12. This one, in Lansing, began about 10:30 am; the second, in Kalamazoo, began about 3:00 pm. I’d not tried that before; I would do it again. But the parks since have been closer–Battle Creek & Kalamazoo, and East Lansing & Lansing.

My computer has a folder with several hundred photographs, some now quite old, just to make sure I’ve something to post every day. This one’s been sitting in that file for five years. Gone, now.

An additional award, to accompany the Michigan Department of State certificate, at our office’s Longevity Award ceremony. Roses courtesy of my boss.

New camera note: On 5/7/2005 I bought a FujiFilm F10 to replace my broken pocket camera. The F10’s first photo, predictably, was of our cat Taffy; the second, perhaps just as predictably, was of Joan.

There’s stories to go with this photo–about an old barn; about Dave’s chicken coop–but I’ve told them before.

There’s another story. On the day I took this photo the family was building a ramp to the door of the farmhouse. Joan’s dad could no longer navigate the steps, so everyone pitched in and built a sidewalk, a ramp, and (a few weeks later) a patio. It was a cheerful, and productive, day.

A Rose-Breasted Grosbeak takes refuge in our Crabapple tree, where he becomes nearly invisible. And you thought those gaudy colors were all for show.

Couldn’t resist.

My sister’s been posting pix of Grosbeaks on Facebook for a couple days. Thought I’d join the party.
