We walked the trail along the river in Grand Ledge, and I took pix of the scenery, of a squirrel, and (mostly) of geese at Second Island.

A stupid-Joel note: “For images taken with digital cameras, I’m (of course) pretty sure of the photo’s date.” I wrote this sentence on January 3, and dates like April 12 are the reason for the “pretty sure” weasel-words. On 4/12/2013 I photographed a South Bend at Lansing baseball game, but had my camera’s date set to 4/12/2014. A stupid mistake, really; these things happen. Sometimes–like today–I’ll notice such errors, as I file my photographs in dated folders. But that’s not a fail-safe system.

By the way, I often photograph ballgames on April 12. My collection has pix from 2003, 2005, 2013, and 2016.

Stocking Cap

Stocking Cap

An unidentified Dayton Dragons ballplayer, bundled up against the cold during pregame warmups, one year ago today.

I may have known who the player was when I took the photo, but if so I’d forgotten by the time I labelled the images after the game. A glance through the day’s photographs shows that several Dragons were wearing these caps before the game started.

It often snows in early April. And the Midwest League (MWL) baseball season begins in early April. I’ve been snowed on at ballgames perhaps a dozen times, and very cold at least twice that often.

Many professional ballplayers grew up in the South, in California, or in Latin America, and for some their MWL season’s their first contact with winter weather. Watching that encounter can be interesting. Minor league baseball has its charms.

I wait for daffies all winter. Finally ours started to open yesterday. So let’s celebrate!

I’ve posted this one before, by the way. ‘Twas my Flower a Day for January on 1/16/2011. That version’s brighter.

Sometimes I Just Go Looking for a Photo

Sometimes I Just Go Looking for a Photo

This little swamp is on Dow Road, which is the town line road between Sunfield and Roxand Townships in Eaton County, Michigan. It’s a bit of bog, with a small pond, and a very short creek. It feeds (or joins) a drain called Winchell and Union, which runs parallel to Dow on the Roxand side of the road.

Like the title says: Often I just climb in the car and drive around until I discover a photograph. Eventually I’ll find a house, or a barn, or an old schoolhouse. Or I’ll see a wide sweeping landscape. Perhaps I’ll notice a tiny creek, alongside the road, on the edge of a field.

The drain’s name courtesy of Eaton County Geographic Information System, which I just love. GIS doesn’t actually seem to acknowledge this offshoot’s existence.

We’re leaving the Lake Michigan beach to walk on the forest trails at Hoffmaster State Park in Norton Shores.

Not sure how I caught the lens hood in this one–well, clearly it’s a wide angle shot, but still. Things like this shouldn’t happen. It’s a new camera thing–you do things by accident that you couldn’t reproduce on purpose.

Oh, well. It makes a nice frame.

The View from Center Field

The View from Center Field

On This Date: Photo taken 4/5/2006.

Skipped out of work on a gorgeous afternoon to pick up my season ticket at Battle Creek’s ballpark. While I was there I walked around the ballyard’s perimeter. Partly I was taking photographs, but mostly I was soaking in the atmosphere.

The door in the center field wall was open.

The team had been sold, and the franchise would move to Midland the next summer. But for one last season they’d be my team. I was ready for baseball.

Milham Park

On This Date: Photo taken 4/4/2010.

We spent Easter Sunday in 2010 with my brother, wandering from park to park in the Kalamazoo area. We began at Milham Park, where I took this photo. Later we visited Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo; later still we explored Kindleberger Park, in Parchment. A good day.

Easter is usually spent at the farm, with Joan’s family. The chickens photo I posted a few days ago was an Easter photo, and it’s likely I’ll find another farm pic in the next week or so, which will also have been taken at an Easter gathering.

But seven years ago we spent a leisurely afternoon in parks. I remember it fondly.
