The Sun Rises Over Lake Huron

The Sun Rises Over Lake Huron

Sunrise is not the main reason we stay on the waterfront in Saint Ignace, but it’s one of the reasons.

Notice the hotel’s fake owl on the right edge of the photo. We think it was supposed to keep the gulls away. It didn’t work.

The Great Lakes shoreline changes, sometimes in ways you wouldn’t expect. The water’s a lot higher these days than it was five years back, so the beach now ends about where those chairs were.

But there’s more. It appears that the rising water’s completely eroded the small peninsula that used to extend from the hotel’s beach into the Straits. We didn’t expect that.

Escape

Escape

We needed a break from the University of Michigan Hospitals’ waiting room, so we whipped out an electronic map and found our way to Matthaei Botanical Gardens, where Joan and I explored while Richard sat and read.

‘Twas an excellent escape, though it didn’t ease our worries.

I’d known the garden mainly through Mark O’Brien’s photographs of his wife Adrienne’s workplace. I’m glad we finally saw it in person, though the circumstances were trying.

Joan, on the phone with her sister Pam. Probably I knew what she was pointing at when I took the picture, but I’ve forgot.

Last Sail of the Season

Last Sail of the Season

On This Date: Photo taken 8/30/2008

Nine years ago today we spent the afternoon in Port Huron. We wandered along the river, watched sailboats and other pleasure craft out for their last fling of the summer, and saw a few ships–including Sarah Spencer, who’s in the background here.

While the water was a bit rough, the weather was glorious. So were the sailboats.

Sarah Spencer, with her tug consort Jane Ann IV, is an articulated tug/barge (ATB). She was built in 1959 as a powered ship, called Adam Cornelius, and converted to an ATB around 1990. Both as a ship and a barge she’s long been one of my personal favorites.

Sarah, Spencer, and Jane Ann are all names of members of the owner’s immediate family.

She’s been effectively retired for several years, now. She’s a small ship, and perhaps not economical.

Eddie De La Cruz to Joe Benson

Eddie De La Cruz to Joe Benson

On This Date: Photo taken 8/29/2006

De La Cruz is pitching for the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays and Benson’s at bat for the Beloit Snappers, a Brewers affiliate. Midwest League action at Battle Creek’s CO Brown Stadium.

The D’Rays were about done. They’d play two more home dates, then a Labor Day series in Lansing. After those the franchise moved to Midland, where they became the Great Lakes Loons.

I miss ’em. Especially late in August I miss ’em.

Under the lights my baseball photographs are more about capturing action than stopping it. Thus: Eddie’s in motion, the baseball’s a blur, and Joe’s about to swing that bat. The second baseman’s Matt Devins.

Taken on the day my sister was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. I got some good pics of Debbie, many poor photos of the ceremony, and some excellent images of the church’s grounds. I like this one best.

Sidewalk Construction Kit

Sometimes the picture tells a story….

We got home from work to discover our supplier had dumped all this stuff on our lawn. We’d rather expected to find it on our (concrete) driveway.

By day’s end we had the pavers all neatly stacked beside the deck. Moving the sand to the driveway took a couple more evenings.

Our house came equipped with a gravel sidewalk. It was nicely curved, and looked good when new, but was built on the cheap–an inch or so of gravel on a plastic barrier. That didn’t wear well. After a summer discussing options we decided to replace it with bricks.

The project took us about a month, working mostly in the evenings around other activities. (It’s likely I’ll share another photograph or two.) Joan did much of the work; I mostly supplied brawn. Such brawn as I have, anyway.

A couple years later we applied these skills to building a similar sidewalk, and then a patio, for Joan’s parents. We did those much more quickly. Of course, we had more help.

Odd how a movie set can become sort of a shrine….

I first read Kinsella’s Shoeless Joe when it was new, and it was magical. The movie based on the book is differently magical. Both are among my favorites.

After a career spent running and programming computers, my sister enrolled at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque. In late August we’d help her move from wherever she’d spent the summer, then we’d play tourist for a day or two. We took a river cruise, explored city parks, visited Galena, and found our way to Dyersville’s movie set.

Who “we” were varied. I travelled to Iowa with my mother, my brother, and with Joan. Not all such trips were made in August.
