November 9 is the only date where I’ve no photographs I’ve rated at two stars. It seems unlikely this record will last the day….

Photo-a-day projects need variety, and eventually that need catches up with you. This photo was one day’s solution.

I’d seen this dam mentioned somewhere, but hadn’t realized how close it was to home. When I figured out it was just a few miles north of our house I really had to go find it.

Another photo from that trip, with a very short story at the top of the caption. Since I retired before Joan, she’d often ask if my day had a plan as she left for work. This day had one.

Now that I know it’s there, I visit every now and then. Joan and I were there again a few days ago.

Joan blames my heart attack.

Thirteen years ago today we went car shopping. I test-drove a Hyundai Tiburon, a Chrysler Sebring convertible, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and both 2004 and 2005 Mustangs. I’d test-driven a Miata a few months before.

Came home with this one.

“Like your car.” “Thanks, I like it too.”

You’d have thought it was an exotic. People would stop, point, and stare. After a year or so the new design had become pretty common, so the effect died down, but the stares and compliments never completely stopped.

At first most everyone stared. Later on it was mostly 60ish guys who wished they’d bought a pony car in the ’60s.

Like me.

Two Men in a Boat

Two Men in a Boat

Late in the afternoon I stepped out on our room’s balcony to photograph the sunset, and the setting sun’s light on South Haven’s harbor.

My camera found the maritime museum, dozens of empty slips that surely hold boats in the summer, Dyckman Avenue’s drawbridge, the marina across the way, Captain Lou’s just coming to life, and (of course) the sunset. It also found these guys, in search of supper.

There are signs where these piers meet the beach: “Warning. This Structure is Not Designed for Public Access. Proceed at Your Own Risk.”

These waves are not the only danger, but they’re the obvious danger. They’re sometimes much higher. Usually, though, the lake’s much calmer.

We spent a long 2010 weekend in South Haven both to celebrate my retirement and to recover from what had been an exceptionally stressful week.

November fifth, as you can see, was a kinda yucky day. The other days were beautiful, though. We walked the beach, wandered around downtown, tried several local restaurants. And we enjoyed our room at Old Harbor, overlooking the marina.

Cabin fever got to me a year ago, so I headed off to the Michigan State University campus and shot colorful photos.

Some days you just gotta try stuff. This was one of those days.

I was on MSU’s campus for about an hour, playing with settings on my still-quite-new Nikon D500. The pix were mostly of trees and the Red Cedar River, with a few of large buildings and/or passing students. I treated the excursion as an experiment, with odd framings, focus games, and some fairly extreme camera settings. I also swapped lenses more often than I’d usually do.

Not everything I tried worked, of course. But I came out of the session much more comfortable with the camera, and finally had some notion how I wanted to set the thing up.

I’ve also got five pix taken by my brother in 2006, on a trip to Chicago with a church group.

Five years ago today I dragged out my tripod, set my big camera and my long(ish) lens atop it, and snapped merrily away at birds at our feeder. ‘Twas a good day.

Imported from Detroit.

Our house, reflected in my car’s window. And me, reflected on the side. Twice, it would seem.

Bought this car six years ago today. ‘Twas a good car, but I apparently needed another Mustang.
