Reeds in the water at Maple River State Game Area, north of St Johns, Michigan.

The SGA’s mostly about birds. Sandpipers and egrets, herons and swallows, gulls and sandhill cranes. And an occasional eagle, fishing. We also see turtles–a really large one, once–and muskrats. And countless other birds and critters.

We venture out to Maple River once or twice a year. The scenery’s excellent, as is the birding. The September, 2009, outing was exceptional; reviewing my photographs from that day has been fun.

Richard, still on vacation in Minnesota on this date in 2008, took one picture–of Transit Township Hall in Sibley County. It’s kinda cute.

Bonley Farm‘s a few miles from our place. The farm evidently has some fame in the trotting community. Can’t say I know much about that stuff.

What I can say is that the farm’s visibly different from any other local farm. It’s not just the horses; the fences have character, much of the place is forested but not wild, and there are shelters all over the property. Occasionally I try to capture aspects of that look with my camera.

At Michelle’s Restaurant on Gull Road in Kalamazoo. We’d stopped for a late breakfast and I spotted these on the edge of the parking lot. Had to get a photo.

Lansing Lugnut shortstop Peter Mooney relays the ball to first base. The baserunner, who’s out, is Ronny Gil of the Quad Cities River Bandits; Mooney’s throw would not get QC batter/runner Oscar Taveras.

The Midwest League’s regular season ends on Labor Day, and is followed by a three-tiered playoff that ends in mid-month. In 2011 Lansing hosted Quad Cities (they play in Davenport) on September 15 for the second game of a best-of-five series.

The Bandits won the game by a 5-3 score, putting them up on the series 2 wins to no losses. They’d wrap the championship up at home the next night.

Two pics today. Because I want to tell two stories.

Just a reminder that I take lots of photographs at baseball games, only a few of which have shown up in this project.

Two years ago today I headed off to meet with Mike for our twice-a-month coffee klatch (Joe was out of town). We found the coffee shop had closed; they’d lost their lease. They hoped to reopen elsewhere soon.

Since we’d both brought cameras, we turned the morning into a photography outing in downtown Eaton Rapids. First we took pics around G.A.R. (Island) Park, then we found our way to the site of Horner Woolen Mill. This is one of the Island Park photos.

I took about 400 photographs in about 2 hours. I expect Mike’s count was similar.

Late update because I was ill this morning: I posted a similar but differently-framed photograph on the day I took them. Not sure either is better.

Alma College, Alma, Michigan.

I’d never been to Alma before.

Photo-a-day projects get to be boring. You mostly see same the buildings and people and gardens and furniture every day, or every week, and you grow weary of looking for new angles and novel framings. You start playing with depth of field, your photographs take on odd perspectives, you start experimenting with post-processing effects. These “fixes” are worthwhile, but for most people they’re not the solution.

Or you find new subjects to photograph. In the fall of 2012 I found my way to several of Michigan’s small colleges. Five years ago today that college was Alma.

Now and then my Daily Flower Census wanders into Joan’s veggie garden, where sometimes there are flowers and often there’s something interesting.

Sunlight, for instance, slipping in to light up the beans.

Picnic

Picnic

Here’s one of the first photographs I took with the Nikon 1 V2 I mentioned yesterday.

Mulliken seems to be mostly a commuter town these days, but there are a few businesses within the village limit. One of those is CCD Engineering, which is about as downtown as you get at 109 Main Street. They live in an L-shaped building arranged around this green space.

CCD does industrial engineering, though their website’s no longer on line to explain what that means. What we neighbors can see looks like a fairly large machine shop.

When I moved to town in 1991 this building was a hardware store. Like all old hardware stores it had goodies hidden in dark corners. That business changed hands, then moved to a newly-constructed building on the state highway (M-43). Then it failed. Occasionally I wish the store was still here.
