Continuing yesterday’s Ludington story….

The next morning we found breakfast across the street from our hotel, then headed north along the lakeshore. The day was blustery, and Lake Michigan was magnificent.

I took this photo at Point Betsie, where we wandered the beach for a while and snapped merrily away.

Five years ago we headed north for our usual Traverse City vacation to celebrate Joan’s birthday. It occurred to me that I didn’t remember making a reservation, so I got on the horn with Pointes North. Found I was right; hadn’t reserved a room. They could accommodate us starting tomorrow….

Made that reservation, then after a bit of discussion found us a Ludington hotel for the night. We told TomTom about our changed destination (discovering thereby that it calls the town “LOOdington”), followed its directions to the hotel, and found this view at the beach.

Pretty much justified the confusion. We had a good evening, and a good weekend.

I’ve told this story before.

Not doing TC this year. We’ll tell you about our plans presently, I’m sure.

Hammer, chisel, a concrete block to use as an anvil, some broken pavers.

At one end of the walk there was a wedge that needed filled; at the other end a row needed trimmed to fit the available space as the walk met the porch. As we completed the sidewalk project we were cutting bricks.

Worth a mention: A few years later the folks who built our new porch made an effort to fit the steps to our sidewalk. Although the fit’s imperfect we’ve always appreciated that.

Richard’s 2008 vacation to Minnesota continued; he took 14 photographs on the 21st, mostly of the festival he’d watched them prepare for the day before. There’s also a 2005 photo; Dick photographed the lighthouse from South Haven’s beach.

Another place we often wander is Michigan Audubon’s Baker Sanctuary, usually on their Meadow and Marshland Trail. You eventually come to a pretty little pond, which has a neighboring picnic area. This photo was taken there.

Baker Sanctuary’s most famous for its Sandhill Cranes, and for the Crane Festival (called CraneFest) it hosts with Battle Creek Kiwanis every October. We attend the festival most years and highly recommend it.

The sanctuary is near Bellevue, but is often said to be near Marshall. Neither town’s a helpful landmark, so here’s a Google map to the trail. And here’s an excellent trail map that Google found on Audubon’s website. There’s a second trail, called the Doty Wildflower Trail, at the park’s headquarters; it’s also worth a visit.

The sanctuary used to have an excellent website, but that’s gone. Michigan Audubon has a bit of information about the sanctuary scattered here and there on their website.

My brother Richard was still visiting our sister in Minnesota during 2008. Dick got some photographs of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Fernando, where Debbie was pastor; the church was preparing for a festival. He also took some pix of horses at a local farm. In all I’ve 44 photos he took on 9/20/2008.

Reeds in the water at Maple River State Game Area, north of St Johns, Michigan.

The SGA’s mostly about birds. Sandpipers and egrets, herons and swallows, gulls and sandhill cranes. And an occasional eagle, fishing. We also see turtles–a really large one, once–and muskrats. And countless other birds and critters.

We venture out to Maple River once or twice a year. The scenery’s excellent, as is the birding. The September, 2009, outing was exceptional; reviewing my photographs from that day has been fun.

Richard, still on vacation in Minnesota on this date in 2008, took one picture–of Transit Township Hall in Sibley County. It’s kinda cute.

Bonley Farm‘s a few miles from our place. The farm evidently has some fame in the trotting community. Can’t say I know much about that stuff.

What I can say is that the farm’s visibly different from any other local farm. It’s not just the horses; the fences have character, much of the place is forested but not wild, and there are shelters all over the property. Occasionally I try to capture aspects of that look with my camera.
