The combination of dark skies and bright sunshine can make for fun photographs, but it’s inherently unstable. So I grabbed a camera and my car and went hunting for a suitable foreground.

Found these fields on a dirt road about a mile from my home….

Five years ago it rained. I photographed reflections, in monochrome.

I apparently don’t take many photographs in late July. I have no explanation for this.

St Clair River

St Clair River

On This Date: Photo taken 7/24/2010

On the second day of our little Port Huron vacation we took a tour of the St Clair River on Huron Lady II. The little ferry took us down the river a ways, then into Sarnia’s slip and out on Lake Huron.

A fun trip. We need to do it again.

On 7/24/2013 I took my last photograph with a 28-105 mm lens I’d originally purchased for my Nikon N90s around 2000. The pic was of interesting clouds overhead ’round ’bout East Jordan.

I’d have said I’d given the lens away with my D70, but one day I found it stashed in my desk. So I took a few pix with it to verify that it worked, and sold it on eBay. ‘Twas a decent lens, but didn’t add any value to the lens set I’m still using.

Presque Isle @ Blue Water

Presque Isle @ Blue Water

On This Date: Photo taken 7/23/2010

All thousand feet of one of my favorite ships as she passes under the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron and Sarnia. Presque Isle’s just left Lake Huron and entered the St. Clair River.

And a fisherman’s pole, with a bell….

We spent the weekend in Port Huron with my brother and sister, One purpose of the short vacation was to celebrate Debbie’s return to Michigan after several years in Iowa and southern Minnesota. But mostly we were there to watch the big boats pass. ‘Twas a fine outing.

Other July 23 photos feature a similar outing to Duluth and Superior. Debbie, Joan, and I took a harbor tour in 2009.

Properly speaking, Presque Isle’s not a ship at all. She’s a long barge with a technically-separate tug attached–darned near built into–her stern. She’s what the industry calls an Articulated Tug/Barge. But the two pieces are well integrated, and neither’s useful without the other. For all practical purposes she’s a ship.

Mere technicalities. I realize most of my friends don’t care. Mostly neither does anyone else.

Into the Woods at Loleta

Into the Woods at Loleta

On This Date: Photo taken 7/22/1999

Joan said “How about we vacation in the Alleghenies?” (I confess I’m doing some paraphrasing, here.) So we found a place called Loleta.

Loleta was once a logging town in western Pennsylvania, but the trees ran out, the mill closed, and the town was abandoned about a century ago. There’s now a National Forest campground where the town was, with CCC construction at the site and trails through the woods. The camp also turned out to be a fine base for day trips to PA historic sites.

Millrace

Millrace

Babcock State Park’s a pretty place in West Virginia’s New River Gorge where Joan and I have often vacationed. On various trips we’ve camped in a tent, camped in a popup trailer, and stayed in cabins. Obviously we enjoy the place.

The park’s mostly a rather steep wilderness on the side of the gorge, but its most famous feature is Glade Creek Mill. This is that mill, as the sign testifies, but it’s none of the usual pictures. I’ve taken those photographs, too, but….

This is the only digital photograph surviving from that vacation. I’ve film pix from that week, but I can’t confidently date those.

I’d bought my first digital camera in late 2002, and while I was still predominantly a film SLR photographer it was clear by the summer of 2004 that I needed to back up my digital images. So I began burning the pix to CDs. After a false start or two I came up with the system I still use, though it’s been augmented over the years. I began with the oldest digital pix and worked through 2003. At that point I took a break.

Then my laptop’s drive failed. The only digital pix that survived that failure were duplicated, for one reason or another, and stored away from that computer. This photo was one of those. But the larger reality is that I lost most digital images I took between Christmas of 2003 and October 2, 2004.

There’s a lesson in there….

And a new camera note: One year ago today I bought my D500. It’s been fun, but I’m still figuring it out….
