Barn

Barn

What a glorious wreck of a building!

I took thirteen pix of this barn on my way home after spending the afternoon with my sister in Kalamazoo.

You’d think I’d remember taking those photographs, but I don’t. My notes tell me this barn’s on Barry County’s Pifer Road, but I can’t be more precise than that. I know most of Pifer fairly well, which suggests the barn’s near the west end of the road, where I’m far less likely to travel. But that’s really just guesswork, and I’m skeptical of this theory.

I suppose, too, that the place could be on Lacey Road, which is the same road (check the map) and has a longer stretch I don’t know well. While I don’t generally make such mistakes, I’d not rule it out.

Or maybe I’ve just forgotten the barn. Or maybe it’s on some other road entirely and my note’s completely wrong.

I may need to take a scouting trip.

My sister found it on Lacey; here’s a similar photo on StreetView. I should have remembered it; that’s on the part of the road I’ve often traversed.

The Grand River–pretty literally–from Island Park in Grand Ledge.

While I own–and use–some pretty expensive gear, this image was captured with a worn-out 6 megapixel point-and-shoot–a FujiFilm FinePix F10. I think it will do.

I don’t even think it’s my best F10 photo taken along the trail that day.

A grey day, with occasional sunshine.

I’m a horrible photographer on November 16. Most of the date’s pix are boring; many are poorly executed…

Not sure how Joan’s pic sneaked in there (stuff happens), but quite honestly if it wasn’t labeled hers I’d have thought it was mine….

The CSX Bridge across the Grand River in Grand Ledge, near the ledges that give the town its name.

Some folks call this the “High Bridge.” I take that to mean they’ve never seen an actual high bridge.

Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

We walk the trail along the river a couple times a year; it’s not long, and it’s nearby, and it gets us out of the house. Two years back the light had unusually sharp edges.

The bridge was built by/for the Pere Marquette Railway in 1904, replacing an earlier bridge built for a PM predecessor in the late 1880s. Nathan Hoth’s Historic Bridges website has a nice writeup.

I’ve posted this photo before. This version’s a bit more vivid.

There’s still another version. The comments on that one have some discussion about framing that someone might find interesting. My thanks, again, to Jeff and Matt for their feedback.

Four years ago I posted a very similar photo that I took a few seconds after this one.

Under that image I said: “We got our first snow a year ago. Even a bored photographer should be able to make something of new snow.” Still true….

That pic’s commentary goes on to talk about my Nikon 1 V1, and offers the opinion that I’d have likely preferred an Olympus OM-D system. Which bears mentioning because I purchased an OM-D just last week.

I’m still using a (different) Nikon 1, though, and plan to keep carrying it. The Olympus is replacing my D500.

The View from Port Huron

The View from Port Huron

On This Date: Photo taken 11/12/2016

The saltie–an ocean-going ship–Federal Maas heads downstream on the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario, one year ago today.

And it would seem that the gent by the railing has caught himself a fish.

Call me a boatnerd; I don’t mind. If I lived in Port Huron (or Duluth, or Marquette, or the Soo) I’d be down by the river (lake, locks) nearly every day to watch the ships pass. Instead I get to Port Huron and Sault Ste Marie once or twice a year apiece, and make do.

“Boatnerd” is a relatively new word that means a person who watches ships on the Great Lakes. The term was coined by Neil Schultheiss, who began building his www.boatnerd.com website when the World Wide Web was young. His was one of the first sites I discovered when I first got online in 1995.

Baker Sanctuary

Baker Sanctuary

On This Date: Photo taken 11/11/2015

Two years ago Michigan Audubon had just done major maintenance on the trails at Bernard Baker Sanctuary, and landscape photographs tended to show the effects of that work. So my camera mostly concentrated on details–grasses-gone-to-seed, individual trees, dried wildflowers. The set’s quite different from my usual Baker photographs.

Dick loved that hat.

We picked up my brother in Kalamazoo and walked the South Haven beaches on this date in 2009.

This photo was taken at Van Buren State Park. We explored that beach for a while, then walked the beach in town. We likely ate at one of the downtown restaurants.

Joan and I generally get out and walk on Veterans Day weekend. Besides this South Haven excursion my photographs show multiple Baker Sanctuary trips, a few walks along the river in Grand Ledge, and a couple Port Huron outings.

Another version of the story is that I’ve been walking South Haven’s beaches my entire life. My family loved–and still loves–Lake Michigan’s shore. South Haven’s the closest shore to Kalamazoo, so that was our easiest destination.
