A Porch with a View

A Porch with a View

On This Date: Photo taken 10/17/2014

Three years ago today I spent an hour or so wandering around downtown Grand Ledge, snapping photographs of storefronts and walls and vents and stuff. Parking lots and porches, too. In monochrome.

Got all those things in this shot….

Our mid-October weekend is generally committed. We usually visit CraneFest of Saturday; we nearly always visit Joan’s family’s farm on Sunday. The family gathers at the farm to celebrate Alec’s birthday.

The next few days’ photos are full of both events. You are warned.

Yep. Two pix today….

This makes the fourth appearance of this now-vanished building in my On This Date project. I probably miss it, though the henhouse Dave built in its place also makes a pretty good photo subject.

Sandhills in the Winter Wheat

Sandhills in the Winter Wheat

With a bit of color in the trees.

You can, of course, see cranes without attending CraneFest. (You just can’t see as many.) I found these a couple miles from my home, out looking for a meal in a field.

Not my best choice of camera/lens for this photo. But I was out looking for color, not Sandhills.

This year’s CraneFest was rained out as the grounds have become unacceptably wet. I’m rather sad about that. But you can watch cranes fly in to Big Marsh Lake for the next four weekends at the Kiwanis Youth Area, near Bellevue (weather permitting, obviously). Follow the link above for more information. They do this every year; like the festival, the viewing opportunities are hosted by both Kiwanis and Audubon’s Baker Sanctuary.

Near Vermontville, on State Road. Or so my notes say; I’d have guessed this was Vermontville Highway on the other side of town.

For the first few years I lived in the Lansing area I didn’t own a car, so I’d bicycle between my apartment in (or near) Lansing and my parents’ home in Kalamazoo a couple times a month. I’d leave from work on Friday evening, spend the weekend, and return on Sunday afternoon. Most of these trips took about 5 hours; if I hurried I could do the 75 miles or so in four.

I used a variety of routes, but most took me through Vermontville. I got to know the roads in that area quite well.

Vermontville was also about the farthest point I’d reach on my daily rides out of the Lansing area. Most evening rides were in the hour to 90 minute range, which wouldn’t reach that far, but if I wanted to stretch my legs after work I’d generally find my way to Vermontville Highway and head west, usually catching a snack at the Jones store where Mulliken Road crossed V-Ville Hwy. I’d ride a tailwind home and be back to my apartment by dark.

A side effect of those many backroads trips is that I sometimes take the same routes by automobile. While they’re slower than the highways I generally follow, they’re more interesting. This photo was taken on one such trip, a dozen years ago.

The colors were coming along nicely, I’d say. The outbuildings needed some work.

Taffy @ Play

Taffy @ Play

Taffy used to play a game with Joan. It was sort of like catch–Joan would throw something in Taf’s direction, and Taf would bat it back towards Joan. This was her look during the game.

Then the kitty got old, and decided leaping up on the chest of drawers was too risky. We miss this. Likely she does, too.

CraneFest Colors

See? I told you Big Marsh Lake is more marsh than lake.

Three years ago I attached my Nikon FT-1 lens adaptor to my Nikon 1 V2, then fastened my ancient 300mm f/4.0 Nikkor lens to that getup. Then I put the whole mess on my tripod. The result was equivalent to attaching an 810mm lens to my old Nikon N90s film camera, but rather less expensive.

And much more difficult to use. I took hundreds of photographs that afternoon and evening; most were only approximately in focus.

An interesting experiment that I’m glad I tried. But I never repeated it.

(This photo was not taken with that setup, by the way; it used the V2’s native 30-110mm lens.)

The colors ain’t gonna be nearly so good on Saturday….

Likely this weekend I’ll attach the same 300mm lens to my D500, set the “Image Area” to 1.3x, and create the illusion of a 600mm lens. But it’s just an illusion; I could get the exact same results by cropping images made without changing the setting.

I shot 1936 photographs on 10/12/2014, mostly at CraneFest. I think that’s my highest single-day count. While I occasionally manage large counts at baseball games, my usual ballgame counts are between 250 and 500 images. I go to baseball to watch. The photos are a byproduct.

Framed

On This Date: Photo taken 10/11/2014

Fog, and sunshine, and a distant barn on the Cook family’s Flowerdale Farm–but mostly the Peters’ trees, and lawn, and house, and outbuildings. Down the way a couple lots and across the street from our place.

A similarly-framed photo today would mostly show corn. And rain, this morning, rather than fog.

I posted a color version of this photo three years back, though the image was originally conceived as monochrome. It’s intriguing how the changed processing impacts perception.

No flower in our yard today looks nearly this good….

New “Camera” note: Five years ago I got a new phone–a Motorola Droid Bionic. (I thought it was “Huge,” and commented on Facebook–little did I know.) My first photograph with the phone was, predictably, of our cat Taffy. The second was a selfie.

Generally I’m sitting in my seat in the living room when I unbox a new device and read the manual. Taffy’s often in my line of sight…..

CraneFest

CraneFest

On This Date: Photo taken 10/9/2010

Big Marsh Lake is more marsh than lake. Sandhill Cranes live there.

Michigan Audubon and the Battle Creek Kiwanis host CraneFest every October at the Kiwanis Youth Area by Big Marsh Lake, near Bellevue, Michigan. Joan and I attend most years. The hosts also make the crane viewing area available on subsequent weekends in October and November; we sometimes instead/also make it for one of those weekends.

Imagine hundreds of raucous, tall birds in a single location–overhead, or at “rest” in the swamp.

Workshops. An art fair. A book sale. Food. Birds, of course. And probably things I’ve forgotten.

It’s this weekend. You should go.
