The code can be pretty overwhelming. I usually try and look for plugins to accomplish what I'm trying to do - if that fails, there are tons of people working with WP so you can usually find somebody who has solved your particular problem. I've heard good things about Laughing Squid. If someone chooses to go the WordPress.com route, they also host your domain. My personal blog at <a href="http://farlane.com/" rel="nofollow">farlane.com</a> is hosted there. It's a great option if you don't need to do any customization.
